This collection contains correspondence, memoranda, reports, notes, and other materials documenting Robert E. Tranquada's service as Chairman of the Pomona College Board of Trustees, 1991-2000; as member of the Claremont University Center Board of Fellows, 1991-2000; and as first Chairman of the Claremont University Consortium Board of Overseers, 2000-2006. The materials relating to Tranquada's tenure at Pomona College cover a wide variety of topics, testifying to his role as a facilitator through whom different elements of the college community and to his role as representative of Pomona College in its complicated relationship with the broader Claremont community. The materials documenting Tranquada's tenure at Claremont University Center (from 2000, Claremont University Consortium) primarily concern the reorganization, implemented in 2000, of Claremont University Center, in particular establishing the Claremont Graduate School (from 1997, Graduate University) as an independent entity and adding a new institution (the Keck Graduate Institute of Applied Biological Studies), cooperation between the constituent members of the Consortium, land use, and the status and future of the Robert J. Bernard Biological Field Station.

Biographical/Historical note Robert Ernest Tranquada was born in Los Angeles on August 27, 1930, the son of Ernest Alvro and Katharine (Jacobus) Tranquada. He graduated summa cum laude from Pomona College in 1951, and received his MD degree from Stanford University School of Medicine in 1955.
